2014.02.18 記録的な大雪

先週の土曜日、仙台は記録的な雪でした。

記録的な大雪は英語でrecord snowfall、記録的な大雨 はrecord rainfallと言います。

下記の例は大雪に見舞われたの言い方です。


ex)Heavy snow struck Sendai.（仙台は大雪に見舞われた）

ex) Heavy snow hit Sendai.　（仙台は大雪に見舞われた）

Last Saturday, we had a record snowfall in Sendai.

You can say 記録的な大雪 or 記録的な大雨 in English is "record snowfall" and " record rainfall" respectively.


The following examples show how to say 大雪に見舞われた in English.

ex)Heavy snow struck Sendai.
ex) Heavy snow hit Sendai.

2014.02.11 送別会

英語の先生の1人が交換留学生として中国に行ってしまいます。

その先生の送別会を英会話教室でしました。

30名くらいの生徒さんが集まってお話をしたり
美味しいインターナショナルな料理を食べたりして楽しみました。

その先生はとても頭が良くて4カ国語話せます。

超カッコ良くて藤原竜也と向井理を足して2で割ったような感じです。

生徒さんからとても人気がありました。

多くの女性の生徒さん達は彼がいなくなってしまって寂しいと思います！

One of our English teachers is leaving for China as an exchange student.

We had his farewell party at our English language school.

Around 30 students got together and we enjoyed talking and eating nice international dishes.

Our teacher is so smart and he speaks four languages.

He is soooo cool and he looks like across between Tatsuya FUJIWARA and Osamu MUKAI.

He was so popular among the students.

I bet that most of the female students are sad to see him leave.

AとBを足して2で割ったようなもの

ex)It's a cross between yakisoba and spaghetti.
＝それは焼きそばとスパゲティーを足して２で割ったようなものです。

2014.02.04 WAITの使い方

今日はwaitという単語の使い方についてレッスンをしました。
waitの後ろに誰かや何かについて述べたい時には前置詞forが必要です。
でも、どのくらいの時間待つかについていう時、for はつけなくても大丈夫です。



ex) I am waiting for Sue. (私はスーを待っています）

ex) Who are you waiting for?（あなたは誰を待っているのですか）

ex) Are you waiting for someone?（あなたは誰かを待っているのですか）

ex) How long did you have to wait?（どのくらいの時間待たなきゃならなかったの？）

ex) I had to wait a long time, maybe about 30 minutes.
　（長い時間待たなきゃならなかった。たぶん３０分くらい）

ex) I have been waiting a while, perhaps half an hour or so.
　(しばらく待ってるんだよ。たぶん30分やそこら）

We had a lesson about how to use the word " wait" today.

If you put a word  referring to someone or something after the word "wait", you need the preposition "for", but when you talk about how long you wait, you do not need it.

2014.01.28 イギリス英語とアメリカ英語

UP-SLOPEには渡豪予定の生徒さんが数名いらっしゃいます。
今日は、イギリス英語とアメリカ英語のいくつかの違いをお話ししたいと思います。


①綴りが違うものがいくつかあります。

イギリス英語；favourite（大好きな） colour（色） theatre（映画館）
アメリカ英語；favorite（大好きな）   color（色） movie theater（映画館）

②単語も違うものがいくつかあります。

イギリス英語；lift（エレベーター） film（映画）petrol(ガソリン）
アメリカ英語；elevator（エレベーター）  movie（映画）gas(ガソリン）

UP-SLOPEにはイギリス英語を話す先生もいれば、アメリカ英語を話す先生もいます。
イギリス英語もアメリカ英語も両方勉強することは良いことですよね。

We have some students in UP-SLOPE who are going to Australia.

Today, I would like to tell you some differences between British English and American English.

① Some spellings are different.

British English: favourite, colour, theatre
American English: favorite, color, movie theater


②Some words are also different.

British English: lift, film, petrol
American English: elevator, movie, gas



We have some teachers who speak in British English, while some other teachers speak in American English in UP-SLOPE.

It's good for you to study both ways, isn't it?

large(大きい・広い・多い）

largeの後ろには数えられない名詞を置くことはできません。

大きな荷物と言いたい時はbaggage（荷物）が数えられない名詞なので、この場合「大きな」という意味でlargeは使えません。

He has big (×large) baggage.
「彼は大きな荷物をもっています。」
